Leave $2–5 per night in cash for housekeeping at a standard US hotel, rising to $10–20 a night at a luxury hotel or resort, especially one with turndown service or daily deep cleaning.
Leave the tip every day of the stay, not just at checkout — the person cleaning the room can change day to day, and a single end-of-stay tip only reaches whoever happens to clean on the last day.
Put the cash somewhere unambiguous, like on top of a folded towel or next to a short thank-you note. Cash left loose on a bed or nightstand is easy to mistake for money a guest forgot and can go uncollected.
- Add roughly $1 more per extra guest if the room saw heavier-than-normal use — kids, a shared room, or spills that made the cleaning job bigger than usual.
- This is a US-centric norm — hotel tipping expectations for housekeeping are far lower or nonexistent in much of Asia and parts of Europe, so check local convention before assuming the same rate applies abroad.
