Split the bill unless someone offers to pay

On a first date, offer to split the bill rather than assuming who pays; if your date insists on covering it, accept graciously and offer to get the next one.

When the check arrives, reach for it naturally and say something like “Let’s split it” or “I’ve got this one.” Don’t stare at the bill or wait for the other person to move first.

If your date insists on paying, don’t fight them for it. Say thank you, and if you’d like to see them again, offer to get the next one — that’s a low-pressure way to signal interest without making the moment about money.

Why it matters

Who pays on a date varies widely by culture and generation. The safest modern default is to offer to split, or at least to reach for the bill without hesitation. If the other person clearly wants to treat you, accept with thanks instead of arguing — a polite tug-of-war over the check is more awkward than just letting them win.
