Buy from the wedding gift list if the couple has one

If a UK couple has put together a wedding gift list (registry), buy from it rather than choosing something off-list — it's not strictly obligatory, but going off-list is the exception, not the default, and thank-you notes are expected within about a month of the honeymoon.

Check for a gift list before buying anything, most UK couples put one together specifically so guests don’t have to guess, and buying from it is the expected default, not an obligation but the norm.

If your budget doesn’t match anything on the list, buy something similar in style rather than going off-list entirely, a comparable item at a lower price is a completely normal substitute. For a pricier item you can’t cover alone, teaming up with another guest to split the cost also works.

  • A personal, off-list gift is fine, just not the default — a couple will still appreciate the thought behind it, but expect it to be treated as the less common choice rather than an equal alternative.
  • Don’t expect a thank-you right away — proper etiquette gives couples until about a month after the honeymoon to send thank-you notes, so a delay isn’t a sign anything went wrong.

Why it matters

UK couples typically build a gift list specifically to spare guests the guesswork, and to avoid duplicate presents, so ignoring it in favor of a personal choice, while not rude, skips the reason the list exists in the first place. Lists are usually curated with a wide spread of price points, more smaller, affordable items than a handful of expensive ones, precisely so every guest can find something that fits their budget without needing to go outside the list. If nothing on the list works, choosing something similar in style, or pooling with another guest on a pricier item, is the normal workaround rather than skipping the list entirely.
