Expect the man to pay, but offer to split

In China, the man is traditionally expected to pay on a date, but offering to split or reciprocate is appreciated and shows you're not taking him for granted.

If you’re a man, plan to pay — it’s the expected default. If you’re a woman, it’s fine to offer to split or to treat him next time; the gesture is appreciated even if he insists on paying.

Public displays of affection are more restrained than in the West. Holding hands is fine, but heavy kissing in public draws attention.

Why it matters

Chinese dating etiquette traditionally has the man covering the bill, and many women expect this. However, offering to split or to pay for the next date is seen as considerate and modern. A polite back-and-forth over the check is common, and the man usually wins it.
