Don't expect a kiss on the first date

A first date in France rarely ends with a kiss; read the other person's signals and let physical intimacy build naturally over several dates.

End the date warmly but don’t assume a kiss is expected. A hand on the shoulder, a lingering goodbye, or a “I’d love to see you again” all signal interest without pressure.

If you do go for a kiss, let it be mutual — lean in slowly and pause, giving the other person room to meet you or pull back. A rejected kiss is far more awkward than a missed one.

Why it matters

French dating tends to move more slowly than the stereotype suggests. A first date is about conversation and chemistry, not a guaranteed kiss. Pushing for physical contact too early reads as pushy. Let the other person set the pace, and a goodnight kiss happens when it happens.
