Don't bring wine, and don't arrive on time

Skip bringing a bottle of wine to a French dinner party unless you've discussed it with the host beforehand — they've already paired wine to the meal — and show up about 15 minutes after the stated time, not exactly on it.

Leave the bottle of wine at home unless the host specifically asked you to bring one, or you’ve already talked through what’s being served, they’ve usually chosen wine to match the meal, and an unplanned bottle just adds an obligation to open or explain it away.

Aim to arrive around 15 minutes after the time you were given rather than right on the dot. Showing up exactly on time, or early, risks catching your host mid-prep, arriving a little late is read as considerate here, not rude.

  • Bring something else instead — flowers (already arranged, not raw-wrapped), chocolates, or pastries from a good bakery are the standard safe gifts.
  • If wine does come up as the gift, bringing something distinctive rather than a bottle from the supermarket shelf reads better, quality matters more than quantity.

Why it matters

A French host typically plans the wine alongside the menu, so a guest's bottle can land as a mild vote of no confidence in that pairing rather than a welcome contribution, it often just sits unopened. Flowers, chocolates, or pastries from a good bakery are the safer default gift instead. Arrival timing runs on its own logic too: turning up at the exact time you were told puts the host on the spot mid-preparation, so a short buffer, roughly a quarter hour, is the tacit norm rather than a breach of punctuality.
