Show up around 20 minutes late — showing up on time can catch your host off guard

When invited to a home, dinner, or party in Brazil, arriving right on time is unusual — aim to arrive around 20 minutes after the stated time instead, an informal norm known as "hora brasileira" (Brazilian time).

For a dinner, party, or casual invitation to someone’s home, plan to arrive around 20 minutes after the time you were given, not before. Showing up early or exactly on time isn’t wrong, but it’s unusual enough that your host may still be mid-preparation.

Bring a small gift when you’re invited (see the gift-giving entry for what to avoid), and don’t treat this looser sense of time as license to be dramatically late — 20 minutes is the norm, not an hour.

  • Keep the gift rules in mind on your way out the door — see the entry on avoiding purple and sharp-object gifts before you pick something up.

Why it matters

Punctuality in Brazil works differently for social invitations than it does for business meetings: showing up exactly on time to a dinner or party can actually catch a host still getting ready, since the stated time is treated as a loose starting point rather than a hard deadline. This isn't the same as being inconsiderate — it's a shared, well-understood convention that both host and guest are operating under, so arriving a bit late doesn't read as rude the way it would elsewhere. Business meetings don't follow this same looseness, so treat "hora brasileira" as a home-and-social-only rule.
