Take your shoes off, and bring a small gift

Remove your shoes before entering a Chamorro home (follow what everyone else at the door is doing), and bring a small gift like food, flowers, or local snacks as a token of appreciation.

Check the door for a pile of shoes before you knock, and add yours to it if you see one, most Chamorro homes expect shoes off, and it’s easy to spot by simply looking at what’s already there.

Bring something modest when you’re invited: local snacks, a dish you’ve made, or flowers all work fine. It doesn’t need to be elaborate, the gesture itself is what registers.

  • This pairs with the fiesta hospitality norm — if food is involved, expect the same offer-decline-insist rhythm covered elsewhere on this site, a small gift on arrival doesn’t replace that back-and-forth once food comes out.
  • Greet the eldest person in the room first — the same elder-first instinct that governs nginge’ greetings applies the moment you walk in the door, not just during a formal introduction.

Why it matters

Shoes-off is the norm across most Chamorro households, in keeping with the broader value of keeping the home clean and treating it with a bit more formality than the street outside. Bringing something when you're invited, even something modest, is part of the same reciprocity woven through Chamorro hospitality that shows up elsewhere too (chenchule', the wider custom of returning gifts and favors): showing up empty-handed to someone's home reads as taking without giving, even for a first visit where you haven't received anything yet to reciprocate.
