Avoid leather and white-wrapped gifts

Skip leather goods as gifts (many Hindus avoid cow products) and avoid white or all-black wrapping, which reads as funeral-associated, and don't be surprised if your gift isn't opened in front of you.

When unsure, sweets, fruit, or flowers (avoiding white ones) are safe defaults. Skip leather items unless you know the recipient doesn’t observe the custom, and steer clear of frangipani or white flowers specifically, which are used at funerals.

If you’re giving cash, the amount matters more than you’d expect: a round number ending in zero (₹1,000, ₹2,000) reads as incomplete or even inauspicious, since zero signals an ending. The custom is to add one rupee, ₹1,001 or ₹2,001, so the gift symbolically keeps growing rather than closing out.

Hand the gift over with your right hand or both hands. It’s common for the recipient to set it aside unopened rather than unwrap it in front of you, that’s polite restraint, not disinterest.

Why it matters

Cows hold religious significance in Hinduism, so leather items can be an unwelcome gift depending on the recipient's beliefs, bring something else unless you know them well. White (and to a lesser extent black) reads as a mourning color in many Indian communities, unlike its neutral status in the West, so bright wrapping (yellow, green, red) is the safer instinct.
