Take your shoes off at the door, especially on carpeted floors, unless your host tells you not to bother. Wait to be shown where to sit rather than choosing a seat yourself, the best seat in the room (farthest from the door, or to the host’s right) is typically reserved for the guest.
If nobody directs you and it’s not obvious, just ask, “where would you like me to sit?” is a normal, appreciated question rather than an awkward one.
- Some homes keep separate majlis rooms for men and women guests, sometimes with separate entrances, follow whatever direction you’re given rather than assuming mixed seating is the default.
- Once seated, keep your feet flat and avoid crossing your legs toward anyone — showing the sole of your shoe or foot to another person in the room is considered disrespectful here too.
