Let the man make the first move

In Italy, traditional dating etiquette often has the man initiating — asking for the date, paying, and making the first move — though modern couples are more flexible.

If you’re a man, don’t be shy about making the first move — asking for the date, choosing the place, and reaching for the bill are all expected gestures. If you’re a woman, it’s fine to signal interest, but many Italians still appreciate the man taking the lead.

Compliments and charm are part of the culture. A genuine compliment about appearance or style is normal and welcome, not over-familiar.

Why it matters

Italian dating culture still carries a fair amount of traditional gallantry. Men are often expected to initiate, plan, and pay, and women may wait to be asked. That said, younger Italians are far more relaxed, so read the person in front of you rather than rigidly following the old script.
