Go slow on public affection in Korea

Keep public displays of affection modest in Korea — holding hands is fine, but heavy kissing or touching in public is considered inappropriate.

Keep things tasteful in public: holding hands, a hand on the shoulder, or a quick peck are fine. Save deeper affection for private settings.

Be especially mindful in more traditional areas or around older people, where even holding hands can feel forward. Follow your partner’s lead — if they’re reserved in public, match that.

Why it matters

Korean dating culture is warm and affectionate in private, but public displays of affection are more restrained than in many Western countries. Holding hands and light touching are generally acceptable, but passionate kissing or intimate gestures in public draw disapproving looks, especially from older generations.
